Sergei Tchoban Enters Roberto Polo Gallery


We proudly announce that the eminent architect Sergei Tchoban has entered the gallery's stable of artists.

Born October 9th, 1962, in St. Petersburg, Sergei Tchoban is a German architect residing in Berlin and working internationally. He is a member of the Association of German Architects (BDA); the Union of Architects of Russia; the Union of Artists of Russia; and Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts. From 1974-80, he studied at the Leningrad Secondary Art School and from 1980-86, at the architectural department of the State Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg.

At a time when the art of architectural drawing has virtually disappeared, Sergei Tchoban creates extraordinary urban fantasies that serve as the basis for his architectural activity. His passion for architectural drawing led him to found in 2009, the Tchoban Foundation | Museum for Architectural Drawing in Berlin. The first and only museum of its kind, its aim is to revive interest in architectural drawing, to conserve and exhibit historical, as well as contemporary collections, spanning from the eighteenth century to the present.

Sergei Tchoban has successfully participated in international architectural drawing competitions. In 2014, he was awarded the jury prize at the 40th international competition of architectural drawing KRob in the USA and a special prize of the jury at the American Society of Architectural Illustrators (ASAI). In 2015, Sergei Tchoban won the ASAI 30th international competition of architectural drawings, Architecture in Perspective, receiving the Award of Excellence in the category of Drawing from Nature and the Informal Category Award for the best fantasy sketch.

Sergei Tchoban twice curated the Russian Pavilion at the Venice Biennial of Architecture: in 2010, he curated the project 'Russia Factory' and in 2012, his project 'i-city/i-land' was awarded a Special Mention. It was the first time that Russia was awarded at this prestigious event.

Sergei Tchoban's architectural drawings have been exhibited in leading art galleries and museums throughout Europe: AEDES gallery, Berlin (1999); Hellerau Museum, Dresden (2008); Galleria Antonia Jannone, Disegni di Architettura, Milan (2009); German Architecture Museum, Frankfurt am Main (2010); State Hermitage, St. Petersburg (2012); Central House of Artists, Moscow (2013); The State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow (2014); and Cornell University, Ithaca (2015). Several monographs have been devoted to Sergei Tchoban's drawings, including those published by by Jovis Publishers (2005 & 2010); Image Publishers (2013); and Skira (2015).
